New Deal Programs
Works Progress AdministrationThe WPA built highways, airports, bridges, and schools. Artists and writers were also employed by the WPA to create murals and record interviews with former slaves.
Statistics: -Between 1935-1943, employed 8.5 million people -One project included the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston |
Santee Cooper Electricity ProjectThe project built dams on the Santee and Cooper Rivers which created Lakes Moultrie and Marion. These hydroelectric dams produced power to bring electricity to the region and brought jobs to those who built the dams.

Rural Electrification ActThe Rural Electrification Act (REA) brought electricity to farms and rural areas of South Carolina. Government loans helped provide electricity to less populated areas of South Carolina.
Statistics: -By 1940, 25% of farms had electricity which allowed farms to install water pumps and milking machines |
National Recovery ActThe National Recovery Act (NRA) created codes for industries to regulate prices for consumers and hours and wages for workers. This act did not affect textile mills.
Statistics: -Existed for 2 years until struck down by Supreme Court -Enacted more than 500 codes for regulations on businesses |
